CURRENT STATUS, CHALLENGES, MANAGEMENT AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES OF THE RED PALM WEEVIL Rhynchophorus ferrugineus OLIVIER (COLEOPTERA, CURCULIONIDAE) ERADICATION - A REVIEW

The date palm is a cultural and economic heritage of many nations. red weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) among the world’s most serious insect pests palms that have rapidly expanded its geographical distribution host plant range during last decades. Integrated pest management (IPM) followed to suppress using economical least hazardous methods humans environment. Since R. production worldwide, farmers, researchers, scientists developed tactics eradicate this pest. However, there was no published article covering integrating current status, biology, ecology, future control proposes an IPM program. Therefore, in review, distribution, range, importance, infestation symptoms, morphology, were thoroughly discussed. These include early detection infestation, trapping, chemical applications, use bio-agents, bioinsecticides (plant extracts), resistance cultivars, practices, sterile technique, gene silencing technology, quarantine, information system. In conclusion, all available suggest could be successfully managed by developing programs comprising several means control. It hoped review will highlight some aspects raise research gaps directions deserving further investigations develop better understanding therefore contributes sustainability cultivation worldwide.
